Women's Volleyball Win Streak up to Nine Straight with Wins over Purchase and Cooper Union

BRONX, N.Y. - The Lehman College women's volleyball team extended its current winning streak to seven consecutive matches, by winning both ends of the double header on Saturday afternoon at the APEX. The Lightning defeated Purchase College in the first match, and Cooper Union in the second, both by scores of 3-0.

The Lightning are now 9-2 on the season, and remain 3-0 inside the CUNY Athletic Conference. The current seven match win streak is the longest run since 2011.

In the first match, the Lightning beat Purchase with set scores of 25-21, 25-17, and 25-11.

Junior outside hitter Jo-Marie Aquino (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) led the team with 14 kills. She also compiled four solo blocks, eight digs, and two service aces. Junior setter Jessica Gonzalez (Bronx, N.Y./Bronx Theatre) had 22 assists with four service aces. Junior middle hitter Cari English (Yonkers, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) registered seven kills, four blocks, and three service aces.

Sophomore outside hitter Imani Dubois (West Palm Beach, Fla./J.P. Taravella) tallied five service aces, three assists, three digs, and two kills of her own.

Lehman would continue to dominate in the second match of the doubleheader against Cooper Union. The Lightning won with set scores of 25-14, 25-16, and 25-7 to remain perfect in both afternoon matches.

Lehman produced 24 kills as a team with 22 service aces against Cooper Union.

The Lightning will return to action on Thursday, September 26, with another doubleheader at the APEX. In match one, the Lightning will host CUNYAC rival Brooklyn College at 6:00 p.m. Then, Lehman is in non-conference action against Pratt Institute with a scheduled start time at 8:00 p.m.
