Box Score BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Lehman College women's volleyball team rallied from a 2-0 deficit, to post a come-from-behind five-set victory over St. Joseph's College of Brooklyn, on Wednesday evening. Set scores were 22-25, 17-25, 25-19, 25-18, and 15-11.
Playing a pivotal role in Lehman's rally was senior middle blocker
Cari English (Yonkers, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) as she produced a team-high 20 kills, scored 21 points, and recorded 10 digs. Senior outside hitter
Julia Mercado (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) also played a key role, slamming home 13 kills, with 14 digs, and added three service aces.
After dropping the first two sets, the Lightning (11-11) started the third sluggish by falling behind 3-1. From that point on, Lehman took over by going on a 6-0 run, highlighted by two kills from Mercado, to give the Lightning a 7-3 advantage. Â English tallied a kill to make it set-point and Lehman would go on to earn their first set victory, 25-19.
In the fourth set, Lehman started out strong by scoring the first four points, capped off by a service ace from freshman defensive specialist
Lizette Medina (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman). Later in the set, Mercado tallied back-to-back kills to extend Lehman's lead to 16-11. At the end of the set, Mercado slammed down a kill to force the rubber set.
Lehman's momentum carried through to the fifth set as freshman outside hitter
Lindsay Pantaleon's (New York, N.Y./George Washington) two service aces helped Lehman start the deciding set on a 7-0 run. After the Bears (7-11) rallied to make it 7-6, the Lightning regained the momentum by scoring the next three points, highlighted by a service ace from junior setter
Imani Dubois (West Palm Beach, Fla./J.P. Taravella). English tallied back-to-back kills to extend Lehman's lead to 13-9. A service error from St. Joseph's College of Brooklyn completed the come-from-behind victory for the Lightning.
Medina led the way on defense for Lehman with 17 digs. Pantaleon produced 13 digs of her own, while Dubois added eight.
The Lightning will return to the friendly confines of the APEX Main Gym, for a CUNY Athletic Conference match against Medgar Evers, on Wednesday, at 7:30 p.m. It will be Senior Night as Lehman College will honor the seniors with a brief ceremony prior to the start of the match.
