Box Score BRONX, N.Y. – The Lehman College women's volleyball team defeated CUNY Athletic Conference foe Medgar Evers in straight sets, on Wednesday evening. Set scores were 25-14, 25-9, and 25-13.
On a night when Lehman College celebrated Senior Night, the Lightning (12-11, 6-2 CUNYAC) were led by a pair of seniors,
Cari English (Yonkers, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) and
Julia Mercado (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman). English had a match-high 12 kills and scored a total of 18.5 points. She also dominated defensively with six solo blocks. Mercado scored 16 points with 10 kills and recorded a match-high six service aces. On the defensive side, she tallied eight digs.
In the first set, Mercado was on a roll as she tallied four consecutive service aces to help Lehman jump out to a 10-3 lead. Later in the stanza, she tallied back-to-back kills to clinch the first set for the Lightning.
In the second set, English registered back-to-back kills of her own to give the Lightning a 7-3 lead. Freshman defensive specialist
Lizette Medina (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) slammed home a kill to force a set-point. An attack error by Medgar Evers (3-25, 0-8 CUNYAC) gave Lehman their second set win of the evening.
In the third set, Medina scored two service aces in a row to give Lehman a 9-5 advantage. Classmate
Lindsay Pantaleon (New York, N.Y./George Washington) produced two consecutive service aces of her own to extend the Lightning's lead to 15-9. Freshman outside hitter
Chaochi Lee (Queens, N.Y./Flushing) helped contribute to Lehman's balanced attack by scoring a service ace to increase Lehman's lead to 22-12. The Lightning went on to win the third set to clinch the sweep.
In addition to English and Mercado,
Maria Richiez-Paredes was also honored in the Senior Night ceremony prior to the match.
The Lightning have clinched the #3 seed in the upcoming CUNY Athletic Conference Championships. Lehman will host #6 Staten Island in a CUNYAC Quarterfinal match, on Tuesday, in the APEX Main Gym. The time of the match is to be announced.
