Box Score BRONX, N.Y. – The Lehman College women's volleyball team defeated John Jay College, 3-1, in a CUNY Athletic Conference match on Thursday evening, in the APEX Main Gym. Set scores were 25-16, 19-25, 25-20, and 25-21.
Lehman (6-7, 3-1 CUNYAC) held the lead for the entire first set as senior middle blocker
Cari English's (Yonkers, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) kill gave Lehman an early 9-3 advantage. Classmate
Julia Mercado (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) capped off the first set by taking a feed from junior setter
Imani Dubois (Bronx, N.Y./J.P. Taravella) and slamming home a kill for the win.
After dropping the second set, Lehman fell behind early in the third, 8-4. The home team responded by scoring the next six points, capped off by another kill from English, to give Lehman a 10-8 lead. After John Jay jumped back out in front, 11-10, the Lightning surged once again by going on a 13-1 run, highlighted by back-to-back kills from senior opposite hitter
Maria Richiez-Paredes (Bronx, N.Y./Notre Dame School). Lehman would hang on to win the third set and take a 2-1 lead in the match.
In the fourth set, the Lightning never trailed. The Bloodhounds (1-9, 0-4 CUNYAC) would make a run towards the end but sophomore middle blocker
Salveira Gonzalez's (Bronx, N.Y./Riverdale-Kingsbridge Academy) 10
th kill of the match gave Lehman their third conference victory of the season.
English led the way for Lehman, hitting .355 on 13 kills, while adding four service aces and two solo blocks. Mercado led the way on defense with 21 digs. Dubois registered a team-high 23 assists and Gonzalez added three of the team's 12 service aces.
Lehman has concluded the four-match conference homestand and will now hit the road for a non-conference rematch with Mount Saint Mary, on Tuesday, September 23. The match is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
