Box Score BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Lehman College women's volleyball team scored an impressive 3-0 victory over host Brooklyn College on Wednesday night. With the straight-set win, Lehman now is in sole possession of third place in the CUNY Athletic Conference with a 4-1 record, while Brooklyn is in fourth place, at 3-2. Set scores were 25-12, 25-22, 25-13.
In the first set, Lehman (7-8 overall) jumped out early, and never looked back. Sophomore Salveira Gonzalez (Bronx, N.Y./Riverdale-Kingsbridge Academy) hit one of her match-high 13 kills to spark a 6-0 run, which was part of a larger 9-2 run. Later in the set, Gonzalez punctuated a 9-1 run, as the Lightning ran to the win.
The second set saw a different Brooklyn (5-9 overall) team. The Bulldogs held a tenuous 18-16 lead before Gonzalez struck again. Moments later, senior Cari English (Yonkers, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) had a kill to tie the score at 21 apiece. Several BC errors created a set-point situation for Lehman, and, once again, Gonzalez delivered with a kill to take the set.
The final set looked more like the first, as the Lightning jumped out early, and led 8-2. After a short Brooklyn rally, Lehman used a 6-0 run to take command. Freshman Chaochi Lee (Queens, N.Y./Flushing) entered the game to serve for match point, and the Lightning sealed the win on an attack error by the hosts.
Gonzalez hit .200 on the night, and added three service aces and five kills. English had seven kills, seven digs, and a pair of solo blocks, while junior Imani Dubois (West Palm Beach, Fla./J. P. Taravella) added a match-high 18 set assists and three digs. Defensive specialist Lizette Medina (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) led the team with 12 digs.
The Lightning will return home for the next match, on September 30, hosting Bronx rival Mt. St. Vincent.
