Box Score BRONX, N.Y. – The Lehman College women's volleyball team earned a thrilling five-set victory over Brooklyn College, in a key CUNY Athletic Conference contest, on Wednesday evening in the APEX Main Gym. Set scores were 25-22, 25-27, 25-14, 20-25, and 15-4. The Lightning are now 4-1 in CUNYAC play, and move into sole possession of third place in the conference standings.
The Lightning were led by senior outside hitter
Jo-Marie Aquino (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman), who tallied 25 kills and had just as many digs. She also added six service aces.
The opening set was a back-and-forth affair, as both teams kept exchanging leads. With the set tied at 22, Lehman finish strong by scoring the last three points, capped off by a kill from Aquino to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
After Brooklyn (4-5, 3-2 CUNYAC) won the second set, the Lightning started the third off strong, thanks to back-to-back kills by Aquino and a kill from senior setter
Imani Dubois (West Palm Beach, Fla./J.P. Taravella) to put the Blue and Gold up 3-0. Aquino's service ace put Lehman up 10-3. Later in the set, the Lightning went on a 7-0 run, highlighted by four service aces from sophomore outside hitter
Lindsay Pantaleon (New York, N.Y./George Washington) to give Lehman a 19-7 advantage. Lehman would go on to win the frame and put Brooklyn on the brink.
The Bulldogs were able to win the fourth stanza to force the fifth and deciding set. In the last set, Lehman scored four unanswered points, highlighted by two kills from Aquino, to go up 6-2. With the home team up 10-4, Lehman scored the last five points, capped off by a service ace from sophomore libero
Lizette Medina (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) to clinch the set and the match.
For the match, Dubois had a solid evening with seven kills, four service aces, 32 assists, and 12 digs. Pantaleon tallied 17 digs with six aces. Junior opposite hitter
Salveira Gonzalez (Bronx, N.Y./Riverdale-Kingsbridge Academy) produced six kills with three assists.
The Lightning will be back in action on Saturday, for the Golden Eagles Classic, on the campus of St. Joseph's College of Long Island. Lehman will battle the host Golden Eagles at 12:00 p.m., then take on Manhattanville at 2:00 p.m.
