Box Score Bronx, N.Y. – The Lehman College women's volleyball team nearly forced a fourth set in extra time, but would eventually fall to Rutgers-Newark in straight sets, 3-0 [8-25, 13-25, 26-28], Thursday night at the APEX Center.
Salveira Gonzalez slammed a game-high 14 kills and eight digs for the Lightning (4-13) in a losing effort, while
Caitlin Vernon added six kills and
Lindsay Pantaleon notched two services. Primary setter
Samantha Delgado dished out 24 assists and
Yaidee Nieves secured a game-best 13 digs in the defeat.
The Scarlet Raiders (11-7) were led by Tabitha Davis, who collected a team-high 11 kills, while Cassie Luken and Nicole Polak slammed five and four kills respectively. Sue Riley totaled seven aces, while Kathy Hormaza added 18 assists in the victory.
After two sound defeats in the first two sets, Lehman fought back from an early 4-0 deficit and pulled ahead 12-11 following multiple Gonzalez and Vernon kills. Following a four-point Rutgers run, the Lightning battled through some great volleys and moved ahead 20-18. The Scarlet Raiders took advantage of errors to move ahead 25-24.
A service error and a Pantaleon kill put the Lightning at set point at 26-25, but Rutgers rattled off three straight scores to earn the two-point set victory and the straight-set win.
Up next for the Lightning is a CUNYAC tri-match on Monday afternoon. They will take on John Jay College at 12:00 p.m. and host Baruch College at 2:00 p.m.
