Lightning Well Represented at CUNYAC Annual Michael Streuerman Scholar Athlete Awards Dinner

Several Lehman College student-athletes were honored at the Annual Michael Steuerman Scholar Athlete Awards Dinner held at Terrace on the Park in Flushing, Queens. 
 
Romulo Valadez (men's swimming), Gisley Velez (women's swimming), Alain Abreu (men's volleyball) and Kimarea Brown (women's volleyball) were all named 2024-25 Scholar Athletes of the Year Honorable Mention. 

Valadez, will be graduating this spring with a GPA of 3.94 and a degree in Nursing.  A member of the Lehman Scholars Program, he is a four year member of the men's swim team.  He claimed a Bronze Medal in the 200 Backstroke (2:22.88) at the 2024 at the 2024 CUNYAC Championships.  In 2025 he was selected to the CUNYAC Sportsmanship Team and won Silver Medals in the 200 and 400 Free Relays and a Bronze in the 200 Medley Relay.  This past winter he was part of the Bronze Medal 200 Freestyle Relay Team at the CUNYAC Championships.  
 
Velez, a leader, has a 3.9 GPA while majoring in Nursing.  As a member of the Lightning women's swim team, she has demonstrated dedication, discipline and a strong commitment to both her academic and athletic excellence. She is currently interning in the Emergency Departmentat BronxCare Hospital, gaining valuable experience and working towards her goal of becoming an emergency room nurse.  
 
Abreu, the men's volleyball team captain majoring in Psychology owns a 3.76 GPA.  This season he was a one-time CUNYAC Player of the Week, and led the Lightning in sets played, digs and service aces.  He plans on going to graduate school to pursue a master's degree in Child Psychology.  

Brown, is the women's volleyball team captain with a 3.675 grade point average who will be completing her master's degree in Special Education after and undergraduate degree in in Health Education and Promotion.  She currently works as a High School biology teacher at Crotona International High School.  Brown was a former President of Lehman SAAC and three year member of the SAAC as well as the CUNYAC SAAC Treasurer. 

Also recognized were all of the student athletes who earned Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year and Sportsmanship Awards.  Amar Ndiaye (men's basketball), Isabela Araujo (women's basketball) and Oscar Calderon (men's volleyball)
 
Also on hand was Lehman College Vice President, Jermaine Wright, Ph.D., Director of Athletics Ryan McCarthy, Sports Information Director Lenn Margolis, Men's Basketball Coach Steve Schulman,  Men's and Women's Volleyball Coach Mickki Curtin, Natalie Nava Herrera, Student Athlete Academic Support Supervisor & Compliance Assistant and Assistant Men's and Women's Swimming Coach Freddy Sanchez.
