The Lehman College women's volleyball team (9-9 Overall, 4-3 CUNYAC) split a pair of CUNYAC matches, falling to the Baruch College Bearcats (12-14 Overall, 5-1 CUNYAC) by scores of 16-25, 15-25, and 13-25 before defeating the Medgar Evers Cougars (0-19 Overall, 0-7 CUNYAC) by scores of 25-7, 25-7, and 25-8 Monday morning at Hunter's Sportsplex in New York, NY.
Leading the way for the Bearcats in their victory over Lehman was Nicole Baruffaldi, as she paced her squad with a match-high seven kills to go along with 14 digs. Martina Micko also chipped in with six kills and five service aces, and Staren Soanes added five kills. Also, it was Kristin Walker tallying a match-high 21 assists. As a team, the Bearcats hit .117 and recorded 15 service aces.
Despite the loss for the Lightning, Gerri-Ann Martin recorded a team-high six kills to go along with nine digs. Captain Jillian Acevedo added 12 digs and three assists, and second-year Lehman player Crissette Maxwell finished with 15 digs. As a team, the Lightning hit -.057.
In Lehman's second match of the day, the Lightning had no problem bouncing back as they defeated the Medgar Evers Cougars in convincing fashion to get their record back to .500. In the victory for the Lightning, Crissette Maxwell paced Lehman as she finished with a match-high nine service aces to go along with six kills and two digs. Lisa Jagdeo added 14 assists and four service aces, and Acevedo contributed with three kills and six digs. As a team, the Lightning hit a whopping .354. Following the victory, Head Coach Daniel Skilins gave his thoughts.
“It was great to see this team bounce back the way it did after a tough loss to Baruch early in the day,” Skilins said. “I wish our record was a little bit better than what it is right now, but we have to keep working and continuing to get better. We're going to take tomorrow off and then go back to work on Wednesday. Hopefully we'll be ready for SUNY Maritime on Thursday.”
Despite the loss for the Cougars, Lennise Noralez contributed with a team-high five kills while Dixil De Freitas tallied four kills and eight digs.
The Lightning will return to action on Thursday evening as they welcome the SUNY-Maritime Privateers to the APEX Center for a non-conference match, with start time scheduled for 7:00pm.
