WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL STAYS PERFECT IN CUNY WITH THRILLING WINS OVER BROOKLYN, CSI

The Lehman College women's volleyball team (3-0 Overall, 2-0 CUNYAC) stayed perfect on the season as they defeated Brooklyn College and the College of Staten Island in back-to-back contests as part of a CUNYAC multi-match played Saturday afternoon at the APEX Center. The Lightning defeated the Bridges by scores 25-21, 13-25, 25-14, 25-17 of in the opener before rallying from a 2-0 set deficit to defeat the stingy Dolphins by a scores of 3-2 (27-29, 22-25, 25-21, 25-22, 15-9).

In Lehman's victory over the Bridges, the Lightning was led by freshman Gerri-Ann Martin who paced her squad with eight kills to go along with six digs. Veteran Jillian Acevedo, who was a standout player for Lehman a season ago, finished the match with five kills, eight service aces and six digs. Also First-year hopeful Lisa Jagdeo tallied 10 assists in the contest.

Despite the loss for the Bridges, it was Yamalete Rosa tallying four kills and 11 digs.

In the Lightning's second game of the day, Lehman found themselves in a dangerous hole as they dropped the first two sets to the Dolphins. From there, however, the Lightning would regain their composure and show grittiness, rallying back to claim victory in match's final three sets to give the Lightning an early-season dramatic victory.

Martin once again paced the Lightning, as she earned 12 kills while recording eight digs and seven service aces against CSI. Acevedo tallied 19 digs and earned eight kills, and Lakeisha Gordon also added eight kills. Jagdeo continued to be a difference-maker in Lehman's second match of the day, as she had 19 assists.

In a losing effort for the Dolphins, Joanna Tepedino paced her squad with 12 kills to go along with six digs and three service aces. Vanessa Perez, Caitlin Rogers, and Alba Basha all tallied eight kills apiece.

Following the consecutive victories for the Lightning, Head Coach Daniel Skilins was extremely happy with his team's perseverance and heart.

“We earned two terrific victories today, and I was very proud of how we didn't lose our focus after dropping the first two sets to Staten Island,” he said. “We hung in there, battled, and came out winners. Hopefully we can build on this momentum and use this as a springboard. It was a tremendous effort by the team today.”

The Lightning will return to action on Tuesday evening as the team travels to Manhattan to battle the Hunter College Hawks in a CUNYAC contest, with match-time scheduled for 6:00pm.
