WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL STAYS HOT, RECORDS VICTORY OVER COLLEGE OF NEW ROCHELLE

The Lehman College women's volleyball team (4-1 Overall, 2-1 CUNYAC) continued its hot play to start the season as the Lightning defeated the College of New Rochelle Blue Angels (0-5 Overall, 0-0 HVWAC) by scores of 25-8, 25-22, and 25-17 Wednesday evening in Bronxville, NY.

The Lightning captured the first match of the evening rather quickly before being put to the test in the second match. After pulling out a hard-fought second match, Lehman closed it out in the third set with an eight point victory. Lehman was led by freshman Gerri-Ann Martin who had another impressive game in the early stages of the season, as she led Lehman with a match-high 11 kills to go along with seven digs and four service aces. In addition, sophomore Crissette Maxwell tallied five kills and six digs, and freshman setter Lisa Jagdeo added 13 digs.

The Lightning outdid the Blue Angels in kills and service aces for the evening. Lehman tallied 24 kills while also recording 18 service aces, while the College of New Rochelle totaled 16 kills and added 10 service aces. Following the match, Head Coach Daniel Skilins was happy with his squad.

“I am very happy with our execution in the young stages of this 2008 season,” Skilins said. “Everybody is moving to the ball, and these girls want to work and make their teammates better, and they are all making each other better. With that being said, there are things on the court that we can improve on, but right now we're 4-1 and hopefully we'll continue playing volleyball as a cohesive unit.”

In a losing effort for the Blue Angels, sophomore Patrice Marshall tallied four kills to go along with 10 digs. Also, fellow sophomore Karlene Henriques four kills and three digs, and senior Megan Showell tallied seven digs and five service aces.

The Lightning will return to action on Saturday afternoon as the team welcomes William Paterson University to the APEX Center, with match-time scheduled for 1:00pm.
