The Lightning picked up the huge conference victory thanks mostly in part to tremendous goaltending, gritty defense, and a timely goal by one of its most dependable players.
Both teams battled in the first half, but neither team was able to score a goal. The first 45 minutes of play saw Lehman College record only one shot, while the Hawks blasted seven. Hunter College committed 10 fouls in the opening period while the Lightning were guilty of nine. Despite some intense back-and-forth between the teams, the game remained scoreless after the first half.
At the 53:31 mark, however, Lehman's Daniel Brentuo broke the scoreless tie by blasting a shot past Hunter College netminder Alexandre Ilic and giving his team a 1-0 lead. The play of Lehman's goaltender Michael Hintze and the effectiveness of the Lightning defense made that goal stand up, as Lehman College held on for an exciting one-goal victory.
In the win, Michael Hintze picked up a shutout, his fourth of the season.
The Lightning will close out the regular season on Wednesday evening as Lehman returns to action to battle the Medgar Evers Cougars at the South Field in the Bronx, with start time scheduled for 7:00pm.
