WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL PUTS AWAY JOHN JAY, SNATCHES QUARTERFINAL ROUND HOME MATCH

Box Score

The Lehman College women's volleyball team (11-16 Overall, 6-3 CUNYAC) picked up its third consecutive victory, defeating the Bloodhounds of John Jay College (8-21 Overall, 4-5 CUNYAC) by scores of 25-20, 25-18, and 28-26 Tuesday evening at John Jay's Doghouse in New York, NY. The victory for The Lightning clinched Lehman a quarterfinal round home contest in the 2009 CUNYAC Women's Volleyball Tournament.

In the victory, the Lightning were led by standout Gerri-Ann Martin who put forth one of her best matches of the season as she recorded a match-high 19 kills to go along with 11 digs and five service aces. For the evening, she hit .395 in 38 attempts. Setter Lisa Jagdeo also contributed in a big way as she recorded a match-high 28 assists to go along with nine digs and four kills, and veteran Jillian Acevedo added 13 digs and four assists. For the evening, the Lightning hit .218 compared to just .094 for the Bloodhounds.

In a losing effort for John Jay College, it was Andrea Medina playing well as she recorded a team-high nine kills to go along with 11 digs and four service aces. Siobhan West chipped in with six digs and six assists, and Erica Lee helped out with 11 assists. Following the match, Lehman College head coach Wolfgang Lucena gave his thoughts on his team's effort.

“We knew going in that if we won this match, we would clinch a home contest in the CUNYAC tournament, so we went out there and played our game and came away with a gratifying victory,” Lucena said. “We're playing great volleyball at the right time, but we have one more regular season match left against a very tough non-conference school, so we'll focus on that and hope to put together a solid effort as we head into the playoffs.”

The 2009 CUNYAC tournament is now set, as the Lightning will enter the tourney as the No. 4 seed and will take on the Dolphins of the College of Staten Island, who with a 5-4 conference mark will enter as the No. 5 seed. The match will take place on Tuesday evening, November 3rd, with start-time to be announced. The Lightning do have one regular season match left, however, and that will be a Thursday evening affair with William Paterson University at the APEX Center, with match-time scheduled for 7:00pm.
