The Lehman College women's volleyball team (2-2 Overall, 2-2 CUNYAC) got off to a tremendous start in their CUNYAC portion of the 2009 schedule yesterday as the Lightning picked a pair of league victories, downing the College of Staten Island Dolphins by a score of 3-1 before turning back Brooklyn College 3-0 at a CUNYAC multi-match played at York College in Jamaica, NY.

The Lightning's first contest of the day served as a rematch of last year's classic CUNYAC quarterfinal round contest between Lehman and CSI, a match the Lightning won to advance to the CUNYAC semifinals. Yesterday's match between the two squads would have a similar result as Lehman used a balanced effort led by standout Gerri-Ann Martin to record the victory. Martin posted a match-high 16 kills to go along with 11 digs in the victory. In addition, Jennifer Winkler added six kills, and ace setter Lisa Jagdeo tallied 30 assists.

In the loss for the Dolphins of the College of Staten Island, Joanna Tepedino's 11 kills led the way for her unit, while Alba Basha also chipped in with four kills and a team-high 18 assists. The Dolphins were able to collect eight service aces (led by Basha's trio), but the Dolphins allowed 11 aces of their own. Lehman enjoyed the edge up-front, out-blocking the Dolphins, 7-1.

In Lehman's second contest of the day, the Lightning were led by another balanced attack from Martin, Winkler, Jagdeo, and junior Jillian Acevedo as the Lightning made it two-for-two for the multi-match by stymieing the Bridges by a 3-0 final count. After the day completed, Lightning head coach Wolfgang Lucena gave his thoughts.

“Our team came here to York College today with one goal in mind: To get off to a good start in our league games. I feel like we did a tremendous job of establishing the tempo of both matches early and we worked together and fed off one another. It's great for us to be able to get off to such a fast start in CUNY competition, and hopefully we'll keep this ball rolling.”

The Lightning will return to action Tuesday evening as the team will host the Hawks of Hunter College at the APEX Center, with match-time scheduled for 6:00pm.
