The Lehman College soccer team (0-7 Overall, 0-1 CUNYAC) dropped their seventh consecutive contest to start the 2009 campaign, falling to the Berkeley College of New Jersey Bulldogs in a non-conference tussle by a score of 4-1 Monday evening at the South Field in the Bronx.
In a highly contested first half of action, both teams remained scoreless until the Lightning would break through for the first goal of the evening at the 35:07 mark as Geovanny Arredonde would slip the ball past Bulldog goaltender Kleber Gomez to give his team the 1-0 edge. The score would remain that way as the first half came to an end. The game was evenly contested after 45 minutes of action, as both teams recorded nine shots apiece but only one of those shots making it into a net.
In the second half, it was all Bulldogs. Berkeley College would tie the score at the 52:35 mark as Federico Diaz would blast a goal past Lehman's Marcos Coto-Batres to even things up. The Bulldogs would take the lead for good in the 65th minute (64:45) as Jeff Rosenthal would bury a header off a corner kick from teammate Kevin Santos as Berkeley grabbed a 2-1 advantage. The Bulldogs would add two insurance scores at the 66:30 and 70:20 marks as Richard Lopez and Jordan Rocca would netted the goals (Santos recorded an assist on each) as Berkeley ballooned its lead to 4-1 and never looked back.
For the game, the Bulldogs recorded 21 shots to Lehman's 14, and Berkeley's Klemer Gomez recorded the win in net, allowing just one score while saving seven shots. For the Lightning, Coto-Batres made eight stops but allowed four goals. The Bulldogs committed 20 fouls to Lehman's 18.
The Lightning will return to action on Wednesday afternoon as Lehman travels to Staten Island to battle the Dolphins in a CUNYAC contest, with start time scheduled for 3:30pm.
