The Lehman College women's volleyball team (2-4 Overall, 2-1 CUNYAC) dropped a non-conference match Thursday evening, falling to cross town rival Mount Saint Vincent (4-4 Overall, 0-0 Skyline) by scores of 19-25, 21-25, 25-17, and 17-25. With the victory, the Dolphins improved to a perfect 4-0 on their home floor while the Lightning fell to 0-2 on the road.
Despite the loss for Lehman College, standout outside hitter Gerri-Ann Martin put forth a hearty performance for her squad, pacing the Lightning with a team-high 10 kills to go along with a whopping 22 digs. She hit .114 on the evening. Also contributing was second-year setter Lisa Jagdeo who chipped in with a team-high 22 assists to go along with 13 digs, and junior libero Jillian Acevedo added 25 digs. Newcomer Racine Brown had a nice all-around performance with five kills, six digs, and four service aces.
In the victory for the Dolphins, Lisa O'Shea tallied a match-high 13 kills as she hit .294 for the on the night. She was one of two Dolphins to record double-figure kills on the night, as sophomore Jessica Williams finished with 11. Williams also finished with five digs for Mount Saint Vincent. Bridget Leonard finished the night with a double-double, lifting 15 digs and posting a match-high 29 assists, and Renee Reynes led all players in the match with 29 digs and also finished with a pair of assists and a team-high four service aces.
Following the match, Lehman College head coach Wolfgang Lucena gave his thoughts.
“We knew coming into this match that it was going to be a battle, with this being such an intense rivalry,” Lucena said. “With that, I felt that we played well and we just need to tighten some things up. Now we'll have four days of rest before returning to our CUNY portion of the schedule when we play York College, and I'm sure the girls will be focused and ready for that match.”
Overall for the match, Mount Saint Vincent recorded 42 kills to 26 for Lehman. The Lightning tallied 85 digs to Mount Saint Vincent's 75, and Lehman also out blocked the Mount 3-1. Lakeisha Gordon led the way with a pair of solo blocks for the Lightning.
Lehman will return to action Tuesday evening as the Lightning travel to Jamaica, Queens to battle the York College Cardinals in a CUNY conference contest, with match-time scheduled for 6:00pm.
