SOCCER PICKS UP SPIRITED VICTORY OVER YORK COLLEGE WEDNESDAY IN CUNYAC PLAY

Box Score

The Lehman College soccer team (2-10 Overall, 2-3 CUNYAC) picked up a huge victory Wednesday afternoon as the Lightning defeated the Cardinals of York College (3-6 Overall, 3-1 CUNYAC) by a score of 2-0 in a conference match played in Jamaica, NY. The victory served as the Lightning's second triumph in their last three matches as the team continues to play extremely well after a slow start to the 2009 campaign.

The Cardinals controlled the offensive tempo most of the match, recording 25 shots compared to just five for the Lightning. York College would fail to solve Lehman netminder Michael Hintze, however, as Hintze would stop 10 shots and record a shutout in his first game in net for Lehman.

Lehman picked up both goals in a six-minute span in the first half. Daniel Brentuo scored an unassisted goal in the 35th minute to open the scoring.  Then in the 41st minute, Brentuo set up Geovanny Arredonde for the second goal of the game. Following the victory, Lightning head coach Joe Andre' gave his thoughts.

“Two games in a row, we came out, on the road, in tough environments, and played our hearts out,” Andre' said. “That is all you can ask for from a team. We split a pair of matches with two victory extremely talented teams, and I feel as though our chemistry is getting better and better each and every passing match. Terrific win for us today, and we'll hope to keep things rolling Saturday against John Jay.”

The Lightning will return to action on Saturday afternoon as Lehman welcomes the John Jay College Bloodhounds to the South Field for a CUNYAC match. Start time is scheduled for noon, with forecasts calling for a 40 percent chance of showers.
