Box Score
The Lehman College women's basketball team (5-10 Overall, 3-1 CUNYAC) played another close game, but the Lightning fell Monday evening at the APEX Center, losing to the Richard Stockton Ospreys (7-5 Overall, 2-1 NJAC) by a score of 61-59 in an exciting contest. Richard Stockton's Che'Na Thompson – who finished with eight points – dropped in the go-ahead basket with 1.7 seconds remaining on the clock to give the Ospreys a two-point lead – and essentially – the victory.
Leading the way for Richard Stockton was Julia Fagan as she dropped in a team-high 18 points to go along with a game-high 16 rebounds while connecting on seven of her 11 attempts from the field. She also drilled six of her 11 free throw attempts. Also, it was Aspen Price-Perry coming off of the bench and netting 12 points (5-8 FG) to go along with four rebounds in 22 minutes. As a team, the Ospreys shot 40.7 percent from the floor and out-rebounded Lehman College by a count of 55-38.
Despite the loss for the Lightning, newcomer Leslie Mencia had her second consecutive terrific game, as she scored a game-high 21 points to go along with seven rebounds and five steals while connecting on seven of her 16 attempts from the floor. Also contributing for Lehman College was point guard Tonisha Kirby as she added nine points and dished four assists, and Alicia McDaniel contributed five points and nine boards in 20 minutes of action. As a team, Lehman tallied 14 assists compared to 10 for Richard Stockton, and the Lightning also won the turnover battle, forcing 25 Osprey miscues while committing only 17.
Perhaps missed free throws doomed the Lightning in this contest, but missed opportunities at the charity stripe hindered both teams. Lehman College misfired on 18 of their 31 free throws while Richard Stockton connected on just 11 of their 25 attempts on the evening. Following the loss, head coach Eric Harrison gave his thoughts on the game.
“We played hard, but ultimately we weren't able to win the battle on the boards or make our free throws, so those things definitely came back to hurt us,” Harrison said. “There are areas to our game in which we are making vast improvements, so that is encouraging. Hopefully we can shake this one off quick because we have a very big game coming up on Friday.”
Lehman's next contest will be a rematch of the 2009 CUNYAC championship game, as the Lightning women will travel to Baruch College's ARC Arena to battle the Bearcats, with game-time scheduled for 5:30pm.
