The Lehman College women's basketball team (6-11 Overall, 4-2 CUNYAC) picked up a conference victory, defeating the Cougars of Medgar Evers College (5-10 Overall, 1-5 CUNYAC) by a score of 67-47 Wednesday evening at the APEX Center in the Bronx.
In the victory, Kelsey Ash put forth a tremendous effort with a team-high 18 points (6-13 FG) in 29 minutes of action. In addition – Leslie Mencia – playing in her fourth game for Lehman College – netted 16 points on 7-of-22 shooting to go along with 12 rebounds, four steals, and three assists, and Melissa St. Louis put together a fine all-around effort with 12 points, a game-high 12 assists, four rebounds, and four steals. Following the game, head coach Eric Harrison praised his team's unselfishness.
“We passed the ball well tonight, created, and made things happen,” Harrison said. “That is the type of basketball that we want to play all of the time. If we can share the ball and always be aware of each other on the court, we are always going to be a tough team to beat. I'm very happy about our effort this evening, and hopefully we'll see a similar effort on Saturday at City College.”
Despite the loss for Medgar Evers, it was Tiffany Thompson (the nation's leading rebounder) notched her 15th consecutive double-double as she posted game-highs of 23 points (10-22 FG), 17 rebounds, and six blocks. Shakimba Pierre also had a fine evening coming off of the bench as she scored 12 points and snatched 11 rebounds.
Lehman College won the turnover battle, committing just 10 miscues compared to a whopping 28 for the Cougars. The Lightning also dished 21 assists compared to eight for the Cougars. Medgar Evers swatted nine shots compared to two for Lehman College, and the Cougars also held a slight rebounding edge, grabbing 51 caroms to the Lightning's 47.
The Lightning will return to action on Saturday afternoon as Lehman College will travel to CCNY's Nat Holman Gymnasium for a CUNYAC contest with the Beavers. Game-time at City College is scheduled for 2:00pm.
