Looking to extend its winning streak to four straight meets, the Lehman women's swim team was tripped up by host Hunter College over the weekend, falling to the Hawks in a very close contest, 54-41.
Swimming without team captain
Basilisa Alonso who was absent due to a stomach virus, the Lightning gave Hunter all it could handle. Top performances were turned in by Adrianna Navarette, who captured one first place finish (50-yard freestyle) and two second place finishes (100-yard freestyle, 100-yard backstroke), and
Sylvia Churchill (1st in the 100-yard butterfly; 2nd in the 100-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard freestyle).
Also placing in the top three in various events for the Lightning were
Tanaka Nyemba (2nd in 500-yard freestyle; 3rd in 1000-yard freestyle; 3rd in 100-yard freestyle) and
Aytaissa Estime-Kirkpatrick (2nd in 1000-yard freestyle; 2nd in 200-yard IM; 3rd in 500-yard freestyle).
Despite the loss, head coach
Peter Kiernan sees good things ahead for his ladies.
“The women displayed spirit and camaraderie throughout the entire meet,” said Kiernan. “We're on our way to building something special.”
The Lightning women do not swim again until January 10th when they travel to Baruch for an always important CUNYAC meet.
