Lightning Strikes Twice on Saturday in Sweep of Doubleheader

Looking to rebound from an uninspiring loss to Mount Saint Vincent, the Lightning did that and more on Saturday afternoon sweeping a doubleheader from Mitchell College and New Jersey City University to get to the .500 mark at 4-4 on the season.

Lehman started the day off with a misleading win over Mitchell College that was much closer than the 3-0 score would indicate as neither team led by more than four points at any time during the first two sets.

Lisa Jagdeo was especially strong during the first two sets registering an uncharacteristic four kills to go along with two service aces as Lehman hung tough. Having battled to a 25-25 standstill, Ashley Meany ultimately gave the Lightning a stranglehold on the match when she recorded a service ace to close out the second set.

Smelling victory the Lightning took a 5-4 lead in the third set and never looked back, building a seven point lead at one interval, 20-13, before finishing off the Mariners with consecutive kills from Ashley Meany, Racine Brown and Gerri-Ann Martin.

Easing her way back into action after missing the previous game due to injury, Martin recorded seven kills in the match to go along with 12 digs. Yamilka Vicente contributed four kills and a service ace for the Lightning.

Fresh off their first game victory, the Lightning played arguably one of their best stretches of volleyball in the first set, building a 12 point lead in taking the initial set 25-13.

New Jersey City University turned the tables, though, in the second set. Despite a spirited Lightning rally that got them to within two points at 22-20, the Mariners were able to hold on for the 25-21 set win.

Once again the Lightning came charging out of the gate in the third set. With the Mariners hanging tough at 14-17, Lehman took six consecutive points, five with Vanessa Brown at the service line, to open up a 23-14 bulge on their way to the 2-1 set advantage.

Not wanting to leave the NJCU campus without the doubleheader sweep, the Lightning showed their resilience in the deciding set, fighting from behind before grabbing their final lead at 17-16 on a kill by Vanessa Brown. Six of the Lightning's eight remaining points were tacked on by kills from Martin and Winkler to take the set 25-22 and match 3-1.

For the match, the Lightning featured three players with double digit kills – Martin with 18; Winkler with 13; and Vanessa Brown with 11. Setter Lisa Jagdeo contributed a whopping 47 assists while Colleen Walker registered 10 digs.

Lehman returns to action when they battle CUNYAC rival York College on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in the Apex Center.
