Lightning Moves Into First Place Tie

The season may still be young, but the Lightning men's soccer team is in first place.

Following Saturday's 3-1 win over CUNYAC rival John Jay, the Lightning moved into a tie with Hunter College for tops in the conference at 2-0-1 and improved their overall record to 3-5-1.

Smack in the middle of the CUNYAC portion of their schedule which will have the Lighting playing six of their final eight games against conference foes, Coach Joe Andre can only hope that his team is building momentum for a strong end of season push.

Lehman might not have been feeling so good following a first half during which they trailed 1-0 on the heels of a goal in the 27th minute by John Jay's Edward Gonzalez. The visitors also allowed the Bloodhounds to pepper Lightning keeper Marcos Coto-Batres with 17 shots.

But Lehman ambushed John Jay for three second half goals behind all-around excellent play by sophomore Geovanny Arredondo to grab the match.

Arredondo knotted the game at 1-1 in the 66th minute with his team leading fourth goal and then assisted on the eventual game winner in the 72nd minute, finding Assami Valian to put Lehman up 2-1.

The Lighting added some insurance in the 89th minute when Frantz Enama found the back of the net to close out the scoring and give Lehman the 3-1 lead.

In the winning effort, Coto-Batres stopped 12 shots.

Lehman continues their run of CUNYAC foes when they host the College of Staten Island Dolphins on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. under the lights in the Bronx.
