The Lehman Lightning baseball team rebounded to take the second game of its doubleheader, 13-4, after losing the first game, 17-6, helping it split with visiting St. Joseph's College on Friday afternoon to improve its record to 4-3.
Lehman was staked to an early 2-1 lead in the first game, but the Bears posted multiple run innings in each of the last five frames to break the game open. The middle of the St. Joseph's order comprised of Kevin Diaz, Joe Mendez and Jon Mendez combined to go 10-for-13 with 11 RBIs. The 17 runs were more than enough for St. Joe's starter, Donny Pagano, who went the distance for the win.
Jhon Comas Disla was 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI for the Lightning in the loss. Lehman starter
Francisco Sanchez was on the wrong side of the decision, giving up seven earned runs in his four innings of work.
The day's second game was a complete turnaround for the Lightning as it jumped on the Bears with three runs in the first inning thanks to a two-run homerun by Robert Del Rosario. The Bears scratched back with two of their own in the top of the third, but Comas Disla shut the door until the Lightning bats awakened two innings later.
Lehman broke the game open with 10 runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, highlighted by three RBIs from Comas Disla on two doubles, a two-run single by
Christian Fadul, run scoring doubles by
Raul Cordero and Del Rosario, and an RBI single by
Justin Moises.
In the win the Lightning's one through five hitters each gained two hits and drove in at least one run, including a 3-for-3 performance by Comas Disla. In addition to his perfect day at the plate, Comas Disla earned the win with six innings of one run ball to go along with seven strikeouts.
Lehman returns to action on Sunday afternoon for a doubleheader against visiting Emerson College.
