Tough Stretch Continues for Baseball

Mar. 31, 2011

Box Score

No team wants to start a baseball game by giving up six runs to its opponent in the first inning, especially when it is in the midst of a six-game losing streak.

But such was the situation the Lehman Lightning found itself in to Mount Saint Vincent after one frame on Wednesday night.

The Pioneers wasted no time in gaining the upper hand as the first five batters of the game scored, highlighted by James Labartino's two-run double and Mike Pope's three-run homer off Lightning starter Jeremy Perez. After two additional batters, a ground out by Fernando Suriel and an error by Miguel Perez that allowed Mark Sargente to reach, Lehman skipper John Foster had seen enough from Perez, replacing him with Denis Schwuchow. Mount touched Schwuchow for one more run to complete the deflating six run outburst.

Lehman's righty reliever did not allow a run over his next two innings before being removed. However, beginning with reliever Justin Moises' entrance in the fourth, the Pioneers posted multiple run innings over the next three frames to take a commanding 13-0 lead.

Lehman would score two in the seventh on an RBI ground out by Jhon Comas Disla and a run-scoring base hit by Moises, and then follow that up with two finals runs in the ninth on some error-filled play by Mount to complete its scoring total.

Pioneers' starter Mike Puma went seven innings for his first victory of the season as Mount improved to 8-13 overall.

A doubleheader with John Jay on Saturday afternoon is next up for the Lightning as it looks to get back on track.
