The Lehman Lightning baseball team fell to 5-19 on Tuesday afternoon, losing 19-11 to host Rutgers-Newark University at Riverfront Stadium in Newark.
The Raiders wasted no time in putting the Lightning behind the eight ball as the first nine batters reached base safely during a nine run first inning. Junior Chris Ballester delivered a two-run double during the frame which also included three walks and two wild pitches by Lehman starter
Francisco Sanchez as well as a costly two-run error in the outfield by the Lightning.
Rutgers-Newark added a pair of runs in the second and third innings, a total matched by the Lightning in its half of the third and fourth on a two-run double by
Jhon Comas Disla and a two-run triple by
Brandon Negron.
However, Rutgers-Newark came back to post a five spot in the fourth, further widening its margin to 18-4.
The Lightning continued to chip away over the next three innings, scoring seven total runs to make the final score respectable. Lehman plated one in the fifth on an RBI triple by
Raul Cordero; four in the sixth on an RBI single by
Christian Fadul , a second 2-run double by Comas-Disla and an RBI groundout by Cordero; and two final runs in the seventh an RBI groundout by Negron and a fielding error by the Raiders.
On the day five Lightning players collected two hits (Fadul, Comas Disla, Negron,
Michael Liang and
Jeremy Perez) with Comas Disla driving in four total runs with his two doubles.
Sanchez absorbed the brunt of the Raiders attack on the mound, allowing 16 runs (14 earned) on eight hits and 11 walks.
Lehman hits the road again on Tuesday, traveling to Danbury to take on Western Connecticut State University for a single game at 4 p.m.
