Box Score
Tuesday night had all the makings of a good night for Lehman baseball against visiting Purchase College.
First the team and the Lehman Athletics Department took time out before the first pitch to honor five departing seniors –
Jeremy Lopez, Arturo Lazaro Jr.,
George Flores,
Ignacio Rodriguez and
Raul Cordero – for their dedication to the program over their careers.
Then the Lightning went out and posted a five run first inning that featured a big two-run double by
Onix Mejia. With ace
Brian Cubero on the mound, Lehman was poised to close the season on a two-game winning streak.
That looked to be the case even more so after the team extended its lead to 8-3 with a three-run fourth inning sparked by back-to-back doubles by
Christian Fadul and
Jeremy Lopez.
But the Panthers would not be denied, scoring two runs in the seventh off a tiring Cubero to cut the lead to 10-7, before eventually tying the game with three runs in the top of the ninth inning.
After the Lightning went quietly in its half of the ninth, Purchase stormed ahead, grabbing its first lead of the game on a double by Austin Droves that brought home Phil Sanford and Dominick Simone.
Unable to muster a counterattack in the bottom of the tenth, the Lightning dropped the hard luck 12-10 decision, ending the season 6-21 overall while missing out on the CUNYAC Championships.
In the loss, the Lightning received a big day at the plate from Mejia, who went 2-for-4 with four RBIs.
Jhon Comas Disla,
Justin Moises and Fadul each contributed two hits to the Lightning's 10-hit attack.
