QUEENS, N.Y. - Coming off two straight victories, the Lehman men's soccer team looked to make an early statement in the City University of New York Athletic Conference on Wednesday night as it took on last season's No. 1 team, Baruch College, at the Metropolitan Oval in Queens.
However, it was the Bearcats that gave the Lightning something to think about, capturing a 2-1 victory on goals by juniors Alvaro Velazquez and Vincent Cruz, to improve their record to 3-3 (1-0 CUNYAC), while the Lightning dropped to 2-2 (0-1 CUNYAC).
The Bearcats were the first to break through on the night when Cruz headed in a cross by junior Kyle Keague in the 17th minute to give Baruch the 1-0 lead. In the 25th minute it was Velazquez's turn as he fired a free kick past Lehman keeper Marcos-Coto Batres from about 30 yards out for the 2-0 advantage.
Lehman narrowed its deficit to 2-1 in the 69th minute on a goal by
Carlos Ribeiro off a Lightning corner kick, but the visitors from the Bronx would get no closer.
Despite the ultimate advantage by the Bearcats in goals, it was the Lightning that kept consistent pressure on Baruch goalies Michael Murphy and Helder Correia with 22 overall shots to the Bearcats' 15.
The Lightning returns to the Bronx on Friday for its next match against SUNY Canton at 6 p.m.
