STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - The Lehman men's soccer team seems to have a habit of playing close matches, with five of its last six being decided by one goal.
That trend continued on Tuesday afternoon against the College of Staten Island as the Lightning came away with a 1-0 victory to move to 3-1 in the City University of New York Athletic Conference and inch closer to first place.
As has been the case so far in the 2011 season, the Lightning controlled much of the action, limiting the Dolphins to only three shots on goal while firing 11 of its own. But despite its constant pressure on CSI's keeper Ahmed El-Ghareib, the game remained scoreless through the first 73 minutes.
In the 74th minute, the Lightning finally broke through as sophomore
Momar Thiam converted a penalty kick for what would prove to be the game-winner. The goal was Thiam's first on the season.
Junior
Oumar Niang continued his strong play up front for the Lightning, launching five shots in the Dolphins offensive end in an attempt to force the action.
Lehman will get its next chance to further its standing in the conference on Saturday when it hosts Brooklyn College at 1 p.m.
