BRONX, N.Y. -The initial forecast of rain for the Bronx on Thursday night may have been a bit premature, but that didn't mean that a storm of another kind didn't blow through Lehman's South Field.
Following a scoreless first half, the Lehman men's soccer team exploded for four second half goals to capture its first victory of the season, 4-0, over visiting College of Mount Saint Vincent.
Junior
Guihounou Guede tallied two goals while sophomore
Assami Valian notched a goal and an assist for the high-flying Lightning.
With nearly 55 minutes of scoreless action in the books, the Lightning had its first outstanding chance of the game when Valian took a feed in the middle of the goal box from Guede only to have the play broken up by charging Dolphins' goalkeeper Matt Calandrillo. The Dolpins' netminder would come to the rescue once again less than a minute later when he turned away
Moussa Toure on a similar play off a feed from pinching defenseman
Carlos Ribeiro.
The Lightning would not be denied for much longer, however, as Guede showed off his powerful left leg in the 57 minute, blasting a shot past Calandrillo into the upper right corner of the net for the 1-0 lead.
In the 59th minute the Lightning struck again as
Oumar Niang pounced on a bobbled ball by Calandrillo off a corner by
Godson Ahiadu to put away the goal and push Lehman's lead to 2-0.
A chink in the Dolphins' armor suddenly visible, Lehman continued to produce quality scoring chances, forcing Calandrillo to have to turn away additional shots from Toure and Niang.
The Lightning's relentless attack was rewarded once again in the 66th minute when Valian, given an endless amount of time to control the ball in the offensive zone, found Guede on the opposite side of the net where he was able to sneak the ball into the right corner for the 3-0 advantage.
Valian capped the night's scoring in the 84th minute as he was in the right place at the right time, cleaning up a miscue by Calandrillo in front for the easy putaway.
Overall the Lightning dominated the flow of action, firing nearly four times as many shots as the Dolphins during the course of the match.
Lehman now stands at 1-1 on the season and will be back on the South Field on Saturday afternoon when it takes on visiting St. Joseph's College (LI) at 2 p.m.
