BRONX, N.Y. – The Lehman College men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to visiting New Jersey City University on Monday afternoon, in a non-conference game played on Lehman's South Field.
Lehman (3-8-1) got on the board first in the game's 20th minute. The Lightning had a direct kick from near midfield, when sophomore Carlos Ribeiro (Bronx, N.Y./Bronx International) sent the ball hard towards the net. Classmate Jonathan Moallem (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) headed the ball past the unaware NJCU keeper, and Lehman led 1-0.
Minutes later, NJCU (8-4) got the equalizer, as Nana Kusi dribbled hard down the left side. He easily slid the ball to Aboubacar Diawara for the goal.
The score remained tied, with both teams having good chances. In the 59th minute, Lehman keeper Maurice Whyte (Kingston, Jamaica/Kingston College) made a brilliant save on a one-on-one situation to keep the score tied.
Eventually, NJCU would break through. In the 79th minute, the ball found Mohamed Conteh in front of the goal, where he scored the game-winner.
On the afternoon, Whyte made three saves. His counterpart for NJCU, Sheldon Parkinson, made six stops.
The Lightning play again on Wednesday, October 3, at Brooklyn College.
