Lehman Volleyball Cruises Past John Jay, 3-0

Feb. 16, 2012

Box Score

BRONX, N.Y. - The Lehman men's volleyball team had no problem with visiting John Jay on Thursday night, keeping the Bloodhounds winless on the season with a straight sets (25-6, 25-8, 25-10) victory to improve its own season record to 6-3.

The match's outcome was never in doubt, mainly due to outstanding serving by the Lightning.  Lehman tallied 18 service aces for the match, led by Miguel Gallardo's 11.

It was Gallardo who got Lehman headed in the right direction with two early aces as the Lightning took a quick 5-0 lead.  John Jay narrowed its deficit to 9-2 before the Lightning ran off five straight points and eventually closed out the dominating first set win with Gallardo firing two more aces among the final four Lehman points.

Set number two was much of the same with Gallardo beginning and ending the set with effective serving.  In between the Lightning used several kills from Orlando Vargas and the first collegiate kill of Ernest Clarke's career to run away with the second set.

While the Bloodhounds tallied their most points of the match in the third set, the outcome was never in doubt, with the match ending, fittingly, on a service ace by Gallardo.

Lehman spread the wealth in terms of attacking with three players - Luis Colon, Brian Francisco and Manuel Bonilla - each slamming six kills.  In addition to his mastery at the service line, Gallardo contributed 21 assists.

The Lightning is back in action on Sunday when the team will play two matches against New Jersey City University and Bard College, with both being held on the Gothic Knights home floor.
