BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The Lehman baseball team received two outstanding pitching performances from Wilfredo Gonzalez and Aneudi Garcia, but ran into two equally good pitchers as the Baruch Bearcats took a key conference doubleheader from the Lightning on Saturday afternoon at MCU Park by the scores of 2-1 and 3-0.

Gonzalez was handed the loss in the first game despite striking out eight and walking only one over his seven innings of work.  His counterpart, Paul Perez, also a freshman like Gonzalez, was equally as good, carrying his shutout into extra innings as the Bearcats won in the bottom of the eighth.

Baruch struck first in the bottom of the fourth inning on an RBI single by Yancy Tavares that scored Thomas Daly.  Lehman would answer in the top of the fifth with an unearned run to tie the game 1-1.

The Lightning had a golden opportunity to go in front in the top of the sixth inning by loading the bases with only one out.  However, Perez induced a double play grounder off the bat of Freddy Parra to end the threat.

Gonzalez did his best to stifle Baruch as he rung up five strikeouts, including striking out the side in the sixth inning, from the fifth through seventh frames.

With the Lightning unable to muster a threat after its chance in the sixth, the Bearcats finally broke through in the bottom of the eighth when Tavares drove home Steve Hession with the winning run.

The second game showcased another pitchers' duel as Garcia and Jesus Izarra quieted the respective bats of their opponents.  Garcia allowed only four hits on the day, but was outdone by Izarra, who allowed just three.

All the scoring came in the third inning, when Daly plated two with a single, and the fifth, when Baruch scored an unearned run.  Lehman's best chance at getting to Izarra came in the third when two men were left on base.

Lehman's three hits in the game came off the bats of Michael Liang, Edwin Marrero and Stephen Valdes.

Sitting at 3-6 in conference play, Lehman will play a crucial game against Yeshiva University on Monday afternoon in the Bronx.
