Almonte's Career-Day Powers Lehman Past Yeshiva

April 16, 2012

Box Score

BRONX, N.Y. - Sporting a five-game losing streak entering Monday night's contest with Yeshiva University, the Lehman baseball team busted out in a big way, clobbering the Maccabees behind a monstrous day at the plate by Frank Almonte to improve its conference record to 4-6.

The Lightning shortstop was a perfect 7-for-7 and drove in 10 runs with the help of not one, but two grand slams.  He also added a two-run single for good measure, in the process raising his batting average 76 points from .234 when the day started, to a healthy .310 by game's end, as well as nearly doubling his season's RBI output from 11 to 21.

Almonte wasn't the only one to have a big day at the plate, however, as Michael Liang was 5-for-7 with seven RBIs and a grand slam of his own.  In fact, Liang and Almonte went yard three batters apart in the top of the eighth when Lehman pushed across nine runs.  Liang could have matched Almonte's perfect day at the plate, but two balls hit right on the button in his first two at-bats found the gloves of Yeshiva fielders.

Also driving in multiple runs were Onix Mejia (2-for-5, 2 RBIs), Edwin Marrero (2-for-3, 3 RBIs), Stephen Valdes (2-for-3, 2 RBIs), and Freddy Parra (2-for-6, 2 RBIs).

Francisco Sanchez was the beneficiary of the Lightning's offensive explosion as he pitched five innings for his third win of the season.  Aneudi Garcia and Liang followed Sanchez to close things out with Garcia looking particularly impressive.  The Lehman righty struck out the side in the sixth inning and six of the 13 batters to face him overall.

Lehman scored in every inning but the second.

The Lightning next takes the field on Wednesday when the team travels to New Jersey to face FDU-Florham.
