Lehman Baseball Drops Under .500 With Loss to SUNY Maritime

April 4, 2012

Box Score

BRONX, N.Y. - Visiting SUNY Maritime used a five-run fifth inning and four-run sixth inning to break open a 2-1 ballgame on its way to a 16-6 win over Lehman on Wednesday night, dropping the Lightning under the .500 mark at 7-8 on the season.

It seemed only a matter of time before Maritime got to Lightning starter Francisco Sanchez, who flirted with danger over the first three innings, stranding seven Privateers on the base paths.

Maritime took advantage of three errors, two wild pitches and four walks issued by Lightning pitching, combined with five hits, to manufacture its nine-run outburst over the middle innings.

Desite the lopsided score, the Lightning showed some fight in the later innings, scoring three in the sixth and two in the ninth.  Chris Tavarez slammed a two-run double, one of two two-baggers for him after entering in the sixth, while Euan Shields and Nick Morales collected run-scoring singles in the ninth.

Stephen Valdes added a 3-for-5 day at the plate for the Lightning.

Sanchez suffered his third loss of the season.

A conference doubleheader with City College of New York is next on tap for the Lightning on Friday.
