Lehman Hangs On For 11-10 Win Over CCNY

April 6, 2012

Box Score

BRONX, N.Y. - Freddy Parra singled home the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning and the host Lehman men's baseball team pulled out an 11-10 victory over visiting City College of New York on Friday afternoon to improve its overall record to 8-8.

Onix Mejia began the winning rally by reaching on a two-base throwing error by Beavers third baseman Kennedy Tavarez after Tavarez had made a nice backhanded stop to corral Mejia's hot shot down the line.  The next batter, Michael Liang, laid down a bunt which was played by CCNY pitcher Alex David, who tried to cut down Mejia at third.  However, Mejia eluded the tag, putting runners on the corners with no one out.

The Beavers then made the decision to intentionally walk pinch hitter Edwin Marrero to face Parra.  With the count 2-2 Parra lofted a ball down the right field line into no-man's land between Montanez at first and Dauris Tavarez in right.  Though Montanez made a valiant over-the-shoulder effort at the grab, the ball ultimately bounced out of his glove as Mejia scampered home with the winning run.

The Lightning's late-inning heroics erased a seven-run comeback by the Beavers, who did their damage with four runs in the seventh and three in the eighth to tie the ball game after Lehman seemed to be in cruise control.

In the early innings it was all Lightning as the hosts scored four in the second on an RBI double by Parra, a run-scoring single by Nick Morales, and a two-run ground-rule double by Christopher Tavarez.  They then added four more in the third on a two-run single by David Painter and another run-scoring hit by the scorching Tavarez, who is now 5-for-7 with five RBIs over his last two games.  Painter later came home on a heads-up baserunning play on a failed pick-off attempt of Tavarez.

Stephen Valdes started for the Lightning and pitched admirably over his six innings of work, scattering eight hits while allowing three runs.  He was also locked in at the plate, going 3-for-4 on the day.

Five Lightning players - Valdes, Parra, Morales, Tavarez and Socrates Peralta - collected three hits each with Christian Fadul adding a 2-for-5 effort.

Lehman will battle CCNY in a doubleheader on Saturday which will count towards the conference standings.
