RANDALL'S ISLAND, N.Y. - The Lehman baseball team gained an important conference victory on Saturday afternoon, splitting a doubleheader with City College of New York to improve its position in the City University of New York Athletic Conference.

The Lightning dropped the opening game of the twin bill 8-7 in eight innings before rebounding to crush the Beavers 18-4 in the second contest.

Christopher Tavarez continued his torrid hitting, going 2-for-3 in the first game with three RBIs, including what was at the time the go-ahead two-run double in the top of the seventh.  Christian Fadul, Freddy Parra and David Painter each picked up three hits for the Lightning with Michael Liang adding a 2-for-5 effort.

Lehman took two innings to get the bats going in the second game, but then didn't stop once it did, posting runs in every inning from the third through the seventh.  Onix Mejia was an extra base machine, pumping out two doubles and a triple over the course of his 4-for-6 afternoon to record five RBIs.  Edwin Marrero also went 4-for-6 and drove in three runs while scoring four.  Stephen Valdes knocked in a pair with a two-run double in the seventh as part of his 3-for-4 output at the plate.  Parra and Liang picked up two more hits a piece as well.

All told the Lightning had seven hits for extra bases among its total of 17.

Lehman begins a stretch of three straight non-conference games on Monday when the team travels out to Long Island to square off against SUNY Farmingdale.
