UTICA, N.Y. – The Lehman College men's soccer squad travelled upstate to face Elmira College, and could not overcome Soaring Eagles' attack, falling 5-4 in a wild game at the Utica College tournament. Lehman is now 1-3-0 on the season, while Elmira improves to 2-0-0.
Lehman scored the first two goals of the game in a seven minute span. Leading off was senior Oumar Niang (Bronx, N.Y./Manhattan Center), who took a pass from junior Ahmed Sene (Dakar, Senegal/Manor Excel) and bounced his shot in off of the goalie. Wilfredo Arbieto-Lopez (Lima, Peru/Norwalk) followed with the game's second goal, as he made a great run down the left side and converted a powerful shot.
Minutes later, Elmira managed to chip in their first goal on a mad scramble in front of Lehman senior netminder Marcos Coto-Batres (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Rye Neck).
Leading 2-1, Lehman had a corner kick in the game's 38th minute. Arbieto-Lopez initiated play on the set piece, and junior Momar Thiam (New York, N.Y.) converted, and the Lightning took a two-goal lead.
In the waning moments of the half, Elmira managed to find the back of the net again, making the score 3-2 at the half.
In the second stanza, Elmira scored twice in the first five minutes and took the 4-3 lead. In the 74th minute, Elmira again scored, taking advantage of a two-on-one opportunity, making the score 5-3.
But the Lightning fought back. Less than a minute later Arbieto-Lopez had a free kick opportunity. He knocked the ball into the box, where Thaddeus Ikwuka (Bronx, N.Y./All Hallows) was waiting and scored.
With the clock ticking down, Lehman had several chances, but also gave up several opportunities. Neither team would score, and Elmira would win 5-4.
For the game, Elmira out-shot Lehman, 18-7, and had more corner kicks, 9-1. Coto-Batres made seven stops in goal for the Lightning. Arbieto-Lopez led the offense with one goal and two assists.
Lehman will face the host Utica College on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
