Men's Soccer Wins Pivotal Match Over John Jay, 2-0

Box Score

BRONX, N.Y. - The Lehman College men's soccer team earned a pivotal victory as the Lightning surged passed John Jay, 2-0, on the South Field on Saturday afternoon, in CUNY Athletic Conference play.

The Lightning are now 2-3 in CUNYAC games and have moved into a tie for fourth place with John Jay. Thanks to today's victory, the Lightning hold the head-to-head tie breaker over the Bloodhounds.

The victory did not come easily, as Lehman had to withstand 11 corner kick opportunities from John Jay. The Lightning's backfield, anchored by sophomore defensemen Maurice Whyte (Kingston, Jamaica/Kingston College), junior Emmanuel Adesanlu (Lagos, Nigeria/Coker Secondary) and senior defensemen Junior Galeas (Bronx, N.Y./Walton) held down the fort and prevented the opposition from scoring.

Freshman goalkeeper Alejandro Romero, (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) also played a significant role in keeping the ball out of the net, by stopping all seven shots he faced to earn his first collegiate solo shutout. He shared a shutout with fellow classmate Jesus Marin (New York, NY/Manhattan Village Academy) earlier this season.

After the backfield kept the game from being scoreless, the firepower came through as freshman midfielder Essosa Aluyi (Nagoya, Japan/Elmont Memorial) passed the ball through two defenders to senior forward Momar Thiam (Dakar, Senegal), who found the back of the net for his seventh goal of the year to put the Lightning up, 1-0, at the 69:04 mark in the second half.

Lehman would add an insurance goal when junior midfielder Jonathan Moallem (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) banged home a free kick from just outside the box off of three defenders and into the net, to increase Lehman's lead to 2-0, with just over 10 minutes left in regulation.

The Lightning will be back in action on Wednesday, October 9, to take on Baruch College, on the road, in another key conference match. The contest is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m.
