THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Lehman College baseball team rallied for two runs in the eighth, and one in the ninth, to win at cross-Bronx rival SUNY-Maritime on Wednesday night, 4-3, in Lehman's first game in ten days. The Lightning are now 3-1 on the nascent season, while Maritime falls to 1-7.
Senior first baseman Freddy Parra (New York, N.Y./George Washington) hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth, driving home junior centerfielder Michael Liang (Bronx, N.Y./Manhattan Center) with the eventual game-winning run. Liang had led off the inning with a double to left center, then advanced to third in a balk.
Maritime took an early lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third off of Lehman starter Michael Santana (Bronx, N.Y.). Lehman got one back in the sixth, before yielding another run in the seventh.
Sophomore reliever Wilfredo Gonzalez (Bronx, N.Y./St. Raymond's) got credit for the win, as he threw the final two innings. He allowed only one batter, on a walk, while fanning two. Three Lehman pitchers held Maritime to three base hits on the night.
Lehman leadoff hitter Miguel Nunez (Santo Domingo, D.R./George Washington) had a pair of hits and scored twice to serve as the catalyst for the Lightning offense. Liang also had a pair of hits, including a double.
Lehman is set to host St. Joseph's of Brooklyn in a doubleheader on Saturday, March 16, on the South Field.
