Baseball Rally Comes up Short Against St. Joseph's

Box Score

BRONX, N.Y. – Dodging a steady stream of snowflakes on Saturday afternoon, the Lehman College baseball team dropped an 11-7 decision to visiting St. Joseph's of Brooklyn. A light snow started to fall as the game began, and intensified as the game progressed. By game's end, the grass infield was white with snow. Hence, the regularly scheduled Game Two of the doubleheader was postponed. No make-up date has been set yet.

A seven-run fifth inning for the Bears (6-0) sealed the game. SJC scored seven runs on six hits, and took advantage of two Lehman errors.

However, the Lightning (3-2) had chances, but could not capitalize enough times. In the bottom of the fifth, right fielder David Painter (New York, N.Y./Marietta (Ohio)) reached on an error to lead off the inning in front of a Socrates Peralta (Santo Domingo, D.R./Morris) double. Lehman was able to only plate one run, on a Russbert Eugenio (Bronx, N.Y./Environmental Studies) groundout.

In the sixth, back-to-back singles by catcher Onix Mejia (Corona, N.Y./Renaissance Charter) and first baseman Freddy Parra (New York, N.Y./George Washington) proved fruitless. In the seventh, Lehman was able to push three runs across on two hits, but it was not enough.

On the day, leadoff hitter Miguel Nunez (Santo Domingo, D.R./George Washington) and Eugenio each had a pair of hits. Centerfielder Michael Liang (Bronx, N.Y./Manhattan Center) had three RBI, on a sacrifice fly in the first and a two-run single in the seventh.

Senior Aneudi Garcia (New York, N.Y./Environmental Studies) took his first loss of the season, yielding ten runs on nine hits in 4.1 innings pitched.

The Lightning look to rebound on Wednesday, March 20, hosting the Stevens Institute of Technology.
