Baseball Comes From Behind in Dramatic Fashion to Beat CMSV, 10-8

Box Score

BRONX, N.Y. – In a battle for bragging rights in the Bronx, The Lehman College baseball team came from behind to beat the College of Mt. St. Vincent on Wednesday night, 10-8. The Lightning used a six-run eighth inning to overcome an early deficit and earn its fifth win of the season, against five losses.

The Dolphins (0-16) jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two innings, chasing Lehman starter Freddy Parra (New York, N.Y./George Washington).

With senior Aneudi Garcia (New York, N.Y./Environmental Studies) now on the hill, Lehman settled own, and got one run across in the fourth, when junior left fielder Michael Santana (Bronx, N.Y.) drove home centerfielder Michael Liang (Bronx, N.Y./Manhattan Center).

In the fifth inning, the Lightning loaded the bases with two outs, before first baseman Justin Moises (New York, N.Y./John F. Kennedy) struck out to end the threat.

The next inning, Lehman loaded the bases again, this time with one out. Right fielder Kevin Hernandez (Bronx, N.Y./DeWitt Clinton) drove in the sole run of the inning, on a fielder's choice.

Entering the top of the seventh, the Dolphins got two more runs, pushing the lead to 7-2. Then, the magic happened.

Liang and third baseman Russbert Eugenio (Bronx, N.Y./Environmental Studies) drew back-to-back walks to open the inning. Moises found redemption by singling to load the bases. After an Onix Mejia (Corona, N.Y./Renaissance Charter) fielder's choice, short stop Waldo Acosta (New York, N.Y./Bread and Roses) singled home Eugenio. Second baseman Miguel Nunez (Santo Domingo, D.R./George Washington) was up next, and he hit a rocket to the second baseman, who booted the ball, allowing Moises to score. Hernandez was up next, and he hit another rocket, this time right at the shortstop, who could not field the ball cleanly, which allowed Acosta and Mejia to score.

But the Lightning were not through. Catcher Alberto German (Santo Domingo, D.R./Cenapec) was up next, and he reached on another error by the CMSV shortstop, loading the bases for Michael Liang. In his second plate appearance of the inning, the centerfielder drew a bases loaded walk, sending Nunez across the plate. Eugenio came up a second time, and singled home Hernandez for the sixth run of the inning.

In the seventh inning alone, Lehman scored six times on three hits and three walks, while taking advantage of three CMSV errors.

In the bottom of the eighth, Waldo Acosta belted a two-run home run to left, which would prove to be the winning runs, as  the Dolphins scratched across a meaningless run in the top of the ninth, for the 10-8 final.

For the game, Acosta and Santana each had three hits, and each scored twice. Acosta had three RBI to lead Lehman. Garcia earned the win, throwing 4.0 innings of relief pitching, allowing three runs, only two of which were earned.

The Lightning look to use the momentum gained on Saturday, March 30, when they host John Jay in a CUNY Athletic Conference doubleheader, beginning at noon.
