BRONX, N.Y. – The Lehman College baseball team hosted CUNY Athletic Conference opponent John Jay College on Saturday afternoon in a conference doubleheader. Lehman lost the opener, 4-0, but rebounded with a 3-2 win in the second game. Lehman is now 6-7 overall, and 2-3 in conference action, while John Jay stands at 2-11, and 1-4.

Junior pitcher Michael Santana (Bronx, N.Y.) tossed a complete game one-hitter in Game Two, lifting the Lightning to a come-from-behind victory. In seven innings of work, he yielded two unearned runs, walked six, and fanned seven. The only hit Santana allowed was a bunt single to John Jay's leadoff batter in the top of the first inning.

The Lightning struck first in the bottom of the third inning. Junior centerfielder Michael Liang (Bronx, N.Y./Manhattan Center) stroked an RBI single to left, scoring junior second baseman Miguel Nunez (Santo Domingo, D.R./George Washington) for the first run of the game. Liang went 2-for-2 with a RBI in the game.

After John Jay plated two in the top of the fifth, the Lightning began their comeback. Junior leftfielder Kevin Hernandez (Bronx, N.Y./DeWitt Clinton) trotted home on an RBI sacrifice fly by Liang to knot the game at 2-2.

The Lightning claimed their lead in the next turn at bat. Senior designated hitter Edwin Marrero (Brooklyn, N.Y./George Westinghouse) started the home half of the sixth with a leadoff double and was pinch-ran for by junior Socrates Peralta (Santo Domingo, D.R./Morris). A few pitches later, short stop Waldo Acosta (New York, N.Y./Bread and Roses) belted an RBI double down the left field line to plate Peralta, giving Lehman a 3-2 edge.

In the top of the seventh, the Bloodhounds had runners at second and third with no outs. Santana got the next batter to strike out then induced a line-out for the second out. The game would then end in grand style, with Nunez and Justin Moises (New York, N.Y./John F. Kennedy) combining to record the final out. On a ground ball up the middle, Nunez dove to his right and threw off balance to Moises, who scooped the ball with a long stretch, getting the John Jay runner out in a close play.

In the first game, John Jay's starting pitcher went the distance to lead his team to the win. Hernandez and senior catcher Onix Mejia (Corona, N.Y./Renaissance Charter School) collected the only Lehman hits. Sophomore starter Wilfredo Gonzales (Bronx, N.Y./St. Raymond) recorded the hard-luck loss, allowing four runs on four hits.

Lehman will host St. Joseph's College of Brooklyn on April Fools' Day, April 1, in a non-conference game. The contest is a makeup date of the original March 16 doubleheader with the Bears, that was postponed by rain.
