Lehman Baseball Drops Doubleheader to CUNYAC Leader Baruch

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BRONX, N.Y. – Pitching woes plagued the Lehman College baseball team on Saturday afternoon, as the Lightning dropped a doubleheader to CUNY Athletic Conference leader Baruch College, 7-2, and 15-1. Baruch cemented their hold on first place in the conference, at 8-0, while Lehman remains in fourth place at 4-5 in the CUNYAC.

The day started off with a bang, with both teams scoring in the first inning of the first game. Baruch put three runs on the board before even taking the field. Lehman responded on the bottom of the first inning, as junior leadoff hitter Kevin Hernandez (Bronx, N.Y./DeWitt Clinton) led off the inning with a single to center, then stole second base, and advanced to third on a wild pitch. The next batter was junior Miguel Nunez (Santo Domingo, D.R./George Washington), who drove him home with a single to right field. The third batter of the inning, senior centerfielder Michael Liang (Bronx, N.Y./Manhattan Center), doubled to left-center, sending Nunez across the plate.  After one inning, Baruch led, 3-2.

From there, sophomore Wilfredo Gonzalez (Bronx, N.Y./St. Raymond's) would settle down, and keep Baruch off the board until the sixth inning. Back-to-back extra base hits scored a fourth run for Baruch, before Gonzalez induced an inning-ending double play to escape further damage. The Bearcats would then add three insurance runs in the seventh inning to cement the win.

In Game Two, Baruch exploded in the first inning for 12 runs, chasing Lehman starter Aneudi Garcia (New York, N.Y./Environmental Studies) midway through the inning. Lehman got its lone run in the second inning, as junior second baseman Russbert Eugenio (Bronx, N.Y./Environmental Studies) scored an unearned run.

The Lightning will get back to work on Sunday, facing John Jay College in a non-conference game, at Padavan-Preller Field in Queens. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
