Baseball Lets Game Slip Away Against Drew, Falling 11-7

Box Score

MADISON, N.J. - The Lehman College baseball team scored runs in each of the first four innings, but it was not enough, as the Lightning fell to the host Drew University Rangers, 11-7, on Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action.

The Lightning (6-9) got off to a hot start, scoring three runs before ever taking the field. Junior left fielder Socrates Peralta (Santo Domingo, D.R./Morris) and senior Michael Liang (Bronx, N.Y./Manhattan Center) hit consecutive singles and came home on a double by designated hitter Edwin Marrero (Brooklyn, N.Y./George Westinghouse), through the left side.  A few batters later, sophomore first baseman Justin Moises (New York, N.Y./John F. Kennedy) roped an RBI single to score Marrero.

Lehman then scored single runs in both the second and third innings to extend their lead to 5-0. In the second inning, junior second baseman Miguel Nunez (Santo Domingo, D.R./George Washington) scored on a Liang single to center. In the next Lightning frame, Peralta drew a bases-loaded walk, forcing home senior catcher Onix Mejia (Corona, N.Y./Renaissance Charter School).

In the top of the fourth, Lehman scored two more runs to increase their lead to 7-1.  Junior right fielder David Painter (New York, N.Y./Marietta (Ohio)) cracked an RBI single, which plated junior third baseman Russbert Eugenio (Bronx, N.Y./Environmental Studies).  Moments later, Moises rounded the bases on an RBI double by junior short stop Waldo Acosta (New York, N.Y./Bread and Roses).

From there, the game seemed to reverse course, as Drew began their comeback. In the bottom of the fourth, the hosts scored twice to trim the Lightning lead to 7-3. A four-run Rangers' sixth made the score 8-7, before they tacked on three more runs for the final outcome.

Moises batted 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored to lead Lehman offensively. Liang and Peralta combined for four hits and two runs scored, while Marrero went 1-for-3 and two RBI.

Senior starter Freddy Parra (New York, N.Y./George Washington) labored through 5.1 innings, taking the loss, as he allowed seven runs on ten hits and fanned three.

Lehman will have the next three days off, before they host City College of New York in a CUNYAC doubleheader on Saturday, April 6. First pitch is slated for 12:00 p.m.
