Box Score
BRONX, N.Y. – Behind 8.1 innings on the mound from sophomore Justin Moises, the Lehman College baseball team beat cross-Bronx rival SUNY Maritime in a Sunday afternoon matinee, 10-4. Lehman has now taken both meetings this year from the Privateers.
Moises (New York, N.Y./John F. Kennedy) worked fast and threw strikes for Lehman (13-16), yielding three earned runs on eight hits. He allowed a single earned run in the first, and a pair in the seventh.
In the Lehman half of the second inning, the Lightning got on the board in a hurry. With the bases loaded and no outs, senior Freddy Parra (New York, N.Y./George Washington) doubled home a pair of runs. Junior outfielder Kevin Hernandez (Bronx, N.Y./DeWitt Clinton) later singled home the third run of the inning, and the Lightning were off and running.
In the fifth inning, with Hernandez on second base and two outs, senior catcher Edwin Marrero (Brooklyn, N.Y./George Westinghouse) singled to right. The relay throw to third sailed out of play, and Hernandez came home. Up next was junior Russbert Eugenio (Bronx, N.Y./Environmental Studies), who also singled to right, sending the speedy Marrero across the plate.
In the bottom of the eighth, Lehman put the game away with five big insurance runs. The first five batters all had hits and all scored. The big hits were a grounds rule double off the bat of Alberto German (Santo Domingo, D.R./Cenapec), who hammered the first pitch he saw across Jerome Avenue, above the 4 train, and a triple by the fleet-of-foot Waldo Acosta (New York, N.Y./Bread and Roses).
Eugenio had three of Lehman's 15 hits on the afternoon, as did junior Miguel Nunez (Santo Domingo, D.R./George Washington). Parra had a pair of hits and a team-high four RBI.
Lehman will host Yeshiva University, an affiliate member of the CUNY Athletic Conference in baseball, on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m., under the lights on the South Field.
