NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Lehman College baseball team held off a determined City College of New York squad on Sunday afternoon, and completed the three-game sweep in dramatic fashion, 6-5. The CCNY home game was played at Salesian High School, in suburban New Rochelle, N.Y.
Lehman (9-9, 4-3 CUNYAC) had defeated CUNY Athletic Conference rival CCNY (3-18, 1-7 CUNYAC) in a doubleheader on Saturday, 12-4, and 6-3.
Today, Lehman pushed across the eventual game-winning run in the top of the ninth inning, on a one-out, bases loaded squeeze play. Junior Kevin Hernandez (Bronx, N.Y./DeWitt Clinton) deftly dropped a bunt down the third base line, catching the Beavers napping, as Socrates Peralta (Santo Domingo, D.R./Morris) came across to score. Peralta had begun the inning with a single up the middle.
CCNY would come within 90 feet of knotting the game in the bottom half of the inning, but with the bases loaded and two outs, junior closer Michael Liang (Bronx, N.Y./Manhattan Center) induced CCNY's second baseman Matt Sola-Baker to weakly ground out, ending the game.
On the afternoon, Peralta had four hits in five at bats, scoring twice, and driving on one. Catcher Edwin Marrero (Brooklyn, N.Y./George Westinghouse) had three hits, and leadoff hitter Miguel Nunez (Santo Domingo, D.R./George Washington) had a pair of hits, with three RBI.
Senior Aneudi Garcia (New York, N.Y./Environmental Studies) started for Lehman on the hill, and went seven innings, yielding four runs, three of which were earned, while striking out five and walking three. Liang earned his second win of the season, throwing the final two innings.
The Lightning will travel to face the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy on Tuesday afternoon, before hosting Baruch College in a crucial CUNYAC doubleheader next Saturday, April 13.
