BRONX, N.Y. – The Lehman College baseball team threw a great celebration on Friday night, beating St. Joseph's of Brooklyn, 6-5, in walk-off fashion, on a bases loaded single by Miguel Nunez.
The seeing-eye single up the middle scored junior Michael Liang (Bronx, N.Y./Manhattan Center), who had singled to right field with two outs. Alberto German (Santo Domingo, D.R./Cenapec) followed Liang with a grounds rule double, before Edwin Marrero (Brooklyn, N.Y./George Westinghouse) walked, loading the bases, and setting the stage for Nunez.
Lehman had held a 5-3 lead after eight innings of play, but the guests scored twice in the top of the ninth to tie it.
Starter Justin Moises (New York, N.Y./John F. Kennedy) went the first three innings, and took a no decision, as did reliever Aneudi Garcia (New York, N.Y./Environmental Studies). Garcia had been in line for the win before SJC tied the game in the ninth. Liang, who started the game in centerfield, earned the win, throwing the final three innings in relief.
Prior to today's game, Lehman celebrated Senior Day, honoring the four seniors who were playing their final game at home. They are Aneudi Garcia, Edwin Marrero, Onix Mejia (Corona, N.Y./Renaissance Charter), and Freddy Parra (New York, N.Y./George Washington).
Lehman is now 15-16 on the season, and will be the #3 seed in the upcoming CUNYAC Championships, which begin on Monday, May 6.
