CONEY ISLAND, N.Y. – The Lehman College baseball team had its season come to an end on Tuesday night, with a 5-1 loss to #2 Baruch College in Game Five of the 2013 CUNY Athletic Conference/MCU Championships, held at MCU Park on Coney Island. The #3 Lightning end the season with a record of 16-18.
Baruch advances to Championship Friday, to face the #1 seed College of Staten Island.
Baruch manufactured their first run in the third inning, when Daniel Arango walked, and eventually scored on a single to center field by Jasdeep Buttar.
In the top half of the fourth, Lehman responded. With one out, Socrates Peralta (Santo Domingo, D.R./Morris) singled, then stole second base. A Michael Liang (Bronx, N.Y./Manhattan Center) single sent Peralta to third, before third baseman Alberto German (Santo Domingo, D.R./Cenapec) brought him home on a base hit through the right side.
Both starting pitchers were masterful on the evening, with Lehman knocking six hits, and Baruch managing just five.
Finally, in the Baruch half of the eighth inning, the Bearcats broke the game open. Lehman starter Justin Moises (New York, N.Y./John F. Kennedy) grew tired, and allowed three straight walks – one was a hit batsman, and one was intentional. With the bases loaded, he yielded another walk, forcing a run home. From there, his day was done, with a line of seven and a third innings pitched, five earned runs allowed on three hits.
However, Baruch was not done, scoring four runs on two hits in the inning.
In the top of the ninth, Lehman showed a lot of fight, as leadoff hitter Kevin Hernandez (Bronx, N.Y./DeWitt Clinton) doubled down the leftfield line. With two outs, German singled, putting runners on the corners. However, that was as close as Lehman would get.
For the Lightning, German had three of Lehman's six hits, with the lone RBI.
Earlier in the day, Lehman eliminated #4 John Jay, 2-1.
