Men's Soccer Beats Yeshiva 4-3 in Overtime to Open 2013 Campaign

Box Score

BRONX, N.Y.- Aleh Kazak scored his second goal of the game at the 6:49 mark of overtime as the Lehman College men's soccer team defeated Yeshiva 4-3 in the opening game of the season for both programs on Friday afternoon. The Lightning are now 1-0 while the Maccabees fall to 0-1.

Junior Emmanuel Adesanlu (Lagos, Nigeria/Coker Secondary) also led the way for the Lightning with two goals and getting the assist on sophomore midfielder Kazak's (Minsk, Belarus/School Number 152) game-winner. Kazak and junior Ronniel Mendez (Matanzas, Cuba/Miami Southbridge) also recorded an assist each.

The Lightning had to overcome three different one-goal deficits, but finally took the lead for the first time and for good in the first sudden-victory overtime period. Trailing by a goal in the opening half, Kazak was awarded a free kick and he took advantage by ripping it past Yeshiva net-minder Joseph Blechner from 15 yards to even the game at one at the 22:16 mark. After Yeshiva regained the lead, Adesanlu took a long pass from Mendez and tipped the ball from the front right into the net to tie the game again with 3:35 left in the half.

Down 3-2 with less than 25 minutes left in the second half, Adesanlu had a breakaway opportunity on a feed from Kazak and nailed the third game-tying goal of the game for the Lightning. The contest could not be settled in regulation so the two teams entered the first ten-minute overtime period. After great scoring opportunities from both teams, Adesanlu connected to Kazak who shot the ball right into the net to clinch the victory for the home team.

Lightning freshman goalkeeper Alejandro Romero (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) made four saves in his collegiate debut.  Lehman had seven corner kicks while Yeshiva had two.

The Lehman Lightning men's soccer team will be back at home on Saturday Sept. 7, when they host Sarah Lawrence College at South Field. The game is scheduled to begin at 2pm.
