PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Lehman College men's soccer team dropped a hard-fought, 3-2, decision to host Manhattanville College on Wednesday afternoon, in overtime. Lehman (1-1) has now played two games this season, with both going into overtime.
The Valiants (2-1) scored the game-winner five minutes into the first extra session, on a penalty kick.
Manhattanville had taken an early 1-0 lead, scoring in the game's third minute. Nary ten minutes later, Lehman newcomer Ronniel Mendez (Mantanzas, Cuba/Miami Southbridge) scored the first of his two goals on the afternoon, when he took a through pass from sophomore midfielder Aleh Kazak (Minsk, Belarus/School Number 152). Mendez chipped the ball over the head of the oncoming keeper and into a wide open goal.
Manhattanville would tack on a second goal late in the first half for a 2-1 lead at the break.
As time dwindled in regulation, Lehman continued to press forward. With less than five minutes remaining in regulation, Mendez took a pass from Florent Mvogo (Yaounde, Cameroon/Manhattan Comprehensive) and sent a rocket into the far corner to tie the score.
Lehman will take a few days break before hosting Sarah Lawrence College on Saturday, September 7, on the South Field, at 2:00 p.m.
